For the month of February, 2006 Forsythís work distills the disembodied experience of seeing, granting visuality itself the weight and materiality of painting. Images generally associated with the sublime or the ephemeral, such as the undulating surface of the ocean, traces left in the snow or images of human fatality are her primary focus of investigation. Although Forsythís imagery is generally collected from the Internet, her process favors the slowness of the hand over methods made more efficient through the use of digital technologies. This exhibition entitled loops & dashes will consist of works on paper covered with intimate networks of hand-made marks, often punctured by delicately cut holes. Shift is a collaborative artists' studio that opened in the fall of 2004 in the newly renovated Tashiro-Kaplan arts complex. Shift was established as an artist-run space with the primary goal of supporting emergent, practicing Northwest area artists. Additional Shift members are Garth Amundson, Crystal Anderson, Stephen Chalmers, Michelle Forsyth, Pierre Gour, Kevin Haas, Cara Jaye, Andrew Kaufman, Elise Richman, Donna Stack, and Carolyn Zick. The opening reception on Thursday, February 2nd will provide an opportunity for the artist to meet the public and discuss her work. The exhibit will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 12-5 PM through February 25th. In addition to its regular hours, Shift welcomes visitors by appointment.
