(set theory)

Cara Jaye’s exhibition (set theory) refers to the mathematical theory of sets, which represent collections of abstract objects.  (set theory) is comprised of three groups of work: Insect Collection, Celebrity Lips, and a floor piece titled Naïve Set Theory. All of the pieces share the theme of multiples and are about relational dependencies, a concept central to set theory. Insect Collection is a body of work that Jaye has been constructing since 1999. This work consists of silver gelatin prints that have been embroidered and painted with blood, then stretched onto canvas. Celebrity Lips consists of over 70 small gouache paintings on paper, and Naïve Set Theory is a mutable floor piece made of specimen boxes, and takes its title from the original set theory develop ed by mathematicians at the end of the 19th century. (set theory) examines ideas of classification, reproduction and perfection.

Jaye holds an MFA from the University of Colorado and a BFA from Parsons School of Design in NYC. She is an Associate Professor of Art at Western Washington University and is a founding member of Shift.

Shift is a collaborative artists' studio that opened in the fall of 2004 in the newly renovated Tashiro-Kaplan Arts Complex. Shift was established as an artist-run space with the primary goal of supporting emergent, practicing Northwest area artists. Additional Shift members are Garth Amundson, Crystal Anderson, Stephen Chalmers, Michelle Forsyth, Pierre Gour, Kevin Haas, Andrew Kaufman, Elise Richman, Donna Stack, and Carolyn Zick.

The opening reception on Thursday, October 5th will provide an opportunity for the artist to meet the public and discuss her work. In addition to its regular hours, Shift welcomes visitors by appointment.
