Susan Gans

Through The Trees An Unknown Land                    2010

Susan Gans is a photographer and printmaker. Her images are narratives that relate to events or situations commonly experienced but not necessarily “seen”. Text sometimes is used to add another dimension to the story. The urban work often poses questions or juxtaposes views.

Landscape work is a developing project about how “place is experienced”. This project departs from a history of “street photography” and montages or prints based on illusion or thematic ideas.

Her work life included teaching in the D. C. Public Schools, Settlement Houses in Washington D. C. and New York City in the 60’s and early 70’s. She had a career in Museums and community arts also on the East Coast. While living in Seattle, she worked as a Family Law Paralegal in the public sector. All these experiences left an indelible mark that has become integral to the content she explores in her work.

Susan graduated from New York University, NY with an MA in Art Education and Printmaking.

She has a BA from the University of Maryland, College Park, MD in Studio Arts and Certificates in Printmaking and Photography from the University of Washington Extension.  In 2008, Susan completed Artist Trust’s Professional Development Program, EDGE.
