Shift Collaborative Studio is pleased to present Ghosts and Monsters, new work by Sarah Gilbert. The exhibition’s 6 object-based works explore the blurring boundaries between people and objects, the physical and the textual. Works include blown glass, embroidered panels, and an installation of found objects and their shadows.

Ghosts and Monsters examines the shared experience of people and objects as they are both continuously subjected to the merciless index of exchangeability. The resulting objects are both beautiful and monstrous: bizarre fabrications of disjointed parts- a realm where text, image, object, and body all co-mingle as equals.

Sarah Gilbert’s work investigates the sensuous form of the object in its immediate capacity as materialized human history. Drawing on the histories of craft and industry, she examines how objects mediate social experience and record human hopes and anxieties. Sarah holds a BFA in Glass from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BA in Art Semiotics from Brown University.
