Maternal Instincts: Sculpture and Encaustics by Mary CossJanuary 3 - February 2, 2008 Shift Collaborative Studio is pleased to present Maternal Instincts, gestural mixed-media sculpture by Mary Coss. Coss' constructions juxtapose organic or figurative imagery with man-made everyday objects. The work includes fabricated and cast metal, wood, and encaustic. Female torsos erupt from whimsical and sometimes sinister skirts. Empty nests appear as artifacts from a disturbed urban landscape with a haunting past. In this body of work, the familiar forms seem common but elicit personal interpretation. Coss has lived throughout the United States collecting stories and telling them through her artwork. She has an MFA from Syracuse University and currently divides her creative attention between studio work and public art projects. Her work can be seen in public collections in Washington and California. Shift is a collaborative artist’s studio that opened in the fall of 2004 in the renovated Tashiro Kaplan Arts Complex. Shift was established as an artist-run space with the primary goal of supporting emergent, practicing, Northwest artists.
