Ellen Hochberg

"The Poetics of Space" began as an investigation into the changes that a woman passes through in the various stages of her life.  "When I was a child, the adults in my life laid out the path I knew they expected me to follow.  I was to go to school, graduate from college, begin a career, get married, and have children.  But at each of those steps, I realized I was a different person than the one I had been earlier, or would be later.  So, using a leaf-like shape as a metaphor, I divided a woman’s life into distinct stages chronicling birth to death.  I began a series of drawings on paper to explore the essence of each stage.  Stages that were unknown to me were left blank."

Inspired by the writings of philosopher Gaston Bachelard and the work of the late artist Louise Bourgeois, Ellen has created a space that she invites the viewer to enter.  A space inhabited with memory and reflection.  “I’ve always felt that the viewer was in a plane of their own, outside of the work of art,” says Hochberg.  “They were sort of voyeurs standing in their own space looking into the space I created.  I wanted to invite them inside the piece and inside the various components of the piece... in the same way you enter and become part of any other space.”  Using drawing, painting and cloth, she has created an environment that invites the viewer to explore the poetics of space.

Ellen received an MA in Studio Art from the NYU. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally.  She teaches art at several area schools and at Pratt Fine Arts.
