Jessie Lyle and Fred Runkel September 2nd – 25th, 2010 Light, Shadow and Liminality An exhibition of drawing, photography, printmaking and poetry Opening First Thursday September 2, 2010 5-8pm Shift hours: Friday & Saturday 12-5pm Or by Appointment: info@shiftstudio.org The word liminality has it’s roots in the Latin word for threshold: limen. Light and shadow embody the extremes of the wholeness of things; liminality describes all that lies between, that which is unknown, and undefined. From a Buddhist perspective one exists in a continual series of thresholds; as soon as one arrives at a fixed moment in time that moment is already past and therefore no longer exists. Out of necessity we structure our lives with fixed ideas and definitions in order to make sense of the entirely mutable state of the world as we know it. What would happen if one loosened the hold on what one knows and opened to the mercurial depths of not knowing? A year ago, spurred by significant life events, artists Lyle and Runkel moved to a rural environment where the inherent beauty of the landscape has supported their creative life. In this place they are held by light and shadow as they dwell in the ambiguity of liminal space. Through collaboration and the application of a variety of media this body of work reflects their efforts to stay open to mystery.
