Shift Announces Two New Exhibits: Thursday November 4- Saturday November 27 2010
Sharon Birzer Observatio Paula Stokes Relativity of Color Bellybottles, (detail), glass, 2010, Paula Stokes, photo credit: Mike Seidl Fine art tells its story through the meticulous craft of Birzer and Stokes. Sharon Birzer uses carbon, graphite, and watercolor while employing scientific illustration methods and monoprint techniques to record her observations of the world in the series Observatio (Latin, observe). Paula Stokes, Relativity of Color, explores the basic color theories of visual harmony. She uses the unique physical qualities of glass sculpture to create a dynamic equilibrium and a sense of visual order. Sharon Birzer grew up in the Midwest and lives in Seattle. She earned a BFA from Cornish College and an MFA from The UW. She recently completed the Natural Science Illustration Program at the UW. www.sharonbirzer.com
Paula Stokes was born and grew up in Ireland. In 1991 she earned a Bachelors Degree in Design specializing in glass from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. She also studied Printmaking at the University of Washington, Seattle. She works in glass and printmaking. www.paulastokes.com Shift is a collaborative artist's studio that opened in the fall of 2004 in the renovated Tashiro Kaplan Arts Complex. Shift was established as an artist-run space with the primary goal of supporting emergent, practicing Northwest artists.
