Shift Collaborative Studio is pleased to present Parts of the Whole: Two Visions. Though disparate in method and material, Mary Coss and June Sekiguchi share the concept of parts to the whole and an exploration of the nature of being. Inspired by her father, a geometrician, Sekiguchi appropriates the theory of the "implicate order" bridging science to the realm of the spirit. Applying this notion to matters of a lifespan, Sekiguchi uses 168 repeated units to create a sculpture that envelopes the viewer. The full scale installation is built with 12 sets of tetradecagons as an ontological narrative. Coss explores the ontology of our circumstances. Looking at nature and human nature in the guise of potential, becoming, and knowing she brings the figurative into a thoughtful realm. States of being manifest as mixed media sculpture. While a beeswax child serves as a vessel waiting to be filled, the reflective sage considers existence and tempts us with answers to the big questions hidden inside of life’s fortune cookies. In both worlds, elements unfold to tell a story. Seattle artist Mary Coss has an MFA in Experimental Studios from Syracuse University. She has exhibited extensively and her work can be seen in public collections in Washington and California. June Sekiguchi received a BA in Studio Art from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She is represented by ArtXchange Gallery in Seattle.
